Pregnant woman found dead, family blames in-laws

Kolkata: The dead body of a 22-year-old lady was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her room at Jibontala area of South 24 Parganas on Monday.
The family of the victim identified as Tumpa Mitra was subjected to mental and physical torture by her in-laws alleged her family in a police complaint. Based on the complaint, the police have arrested her father-in-law. The police is yet to arrest her husband and mother-in-law, who are absconding since Tumpa committed suicide. Local residents, informed the local police when they came to know about the incident. The police reached the spot and recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem. According to preliminary investigation, the victim was found to be pregnant. The local residents also informed the police that they often overheard the couple quarreling with each other. They maintained that the victim's husband used to demand for dowry, promised by her father at the time of their marriage. The local residents told the police that the accused could have been in an illicit relation. They claimed that when Tumpa objected to their relation, he physically abused her. Many a times, she went to her parental house following a quarrel. The accused used to reconcile and bring her back to his house. The family members of Tumpa maintained that they never thought she would take such a drastic step. They also demanded a detailed probe to ascertain if she actually committed suicide or was killed.
