Polytechnic student drowns while bathing in pond at Usthi

Kolkata: Mystery shrouds the death of a polytechnic student whose body was recovered from a pond in South 24-Parganas's Usthi on Sunday morning. The incident triggered tension among locals. It was learnt that the victim, Soumyajit Mondal came to Usthi to attend the marriage ceremony of one of his friend's elder sister. The victim along with six other friends came to his friend's house on Saturday afternoon.

Everything was going fine until Sunday morning when Mondal along with five others went to a pond to bath. When other friends were swimming, they suddenly found that the victim was drowning. Some of the group members tried to save the victim but failed.

The family members of the victim, however, demanded a detailed probe into his death. Locals rushed to spot and tried to rescue the victim. Police officers reached the spot along with the divers.

The body of the victim was later recovered from the pond and was sent to a local hospital for an autopsy. Police are yet to confirm if it was an incident of accidental death or there was any foul play behind it.

According to the preliminary investigation the South 24-Parganas district police said that victim was a student of a polytechnic college at Contai in East Midnapore.
