Polling personnel consumes acid, source says condition stable

Kolkata: A polling person attempted suicide by consuming acid. The incident took place in Ranaghat College on Sunday morning.

The victim, Sudarshan Bashfod, went to the college with an aim to take the

EVMs from there and distribute them in various polling stations.

It was learnt that after stepping into the college the victim took out a bottle from his bag and consumed acid. The incident triggered tension among the other polling personnel.

Some other polling personnels spotted the victim lying on the ground. He was wreathing in pain.

They rushed him to Ranaghat Sub-divisional hospital. He is at present undergoing treatment in the hospital. According to hospital sources the patient's health condition is stable.

He has been kept under strict observation. Hospital sources said that the life of the victim could have been in jeopardy, if he was admitted late to the hospital.

Some of his internal organs have been damaged in the incident. The district administrative officials of Nadia are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind his attempting the suicide.

It was learnt that the victim had been under tremendous mental pressure.

The district administration is conducting a probe into the incident.

Police are conducting a probe to find out why the victim had been carrying an acid bottle inside his bag.

The investigating officers are also conducting probe to ascertain if he was under

mental depression because of problems related his family or job.
