Police take stringent steps to ensure hassle-free Kali Puja

Kolkata: Police made an elaborate arrangement to ensure that Kali Puja passes off peacefully without any trouble in any part of the state.
Kolkata Police chalked out a detailed plan during the forthcoming festival for which there will be deployment of additional policemen in its jurisdiction from Wednesday at different places.
According to a senior police officer, after successfully managing the crowd and traffic during Durga Puja they are leaving no stone unturned in order to make sure that Kali Puja too passes off without any hassle.
There are around 3,500 barowari Kali Pujas in Kolkata. The top brass of Kolkata Police has already held a coordination meeting with representatives from the Puja committees. The Puja committees have been briefed about the measures that they need to follow in order to avoid any untoward incident in and around the Puja mandaps.
There will be additional policemen to keep watch at situations and mainly to keep people from bursting banned firecrackers.
When police keeps watch on roads near Puja mandaps, a section of people choose the terraces of their high-rises to burst the banned firecrackers. Police had noticed it in the past few years and have taken necessary steps to check the menace.
Senior police officers held meetings with representatives from residential complexes in their respective jurisdictions and urged them to ensure that no one bursts banned firecrackers on the terraces.
The police have also been directed to keep watch to find if anyone was bursting banned firecrackers on terraces. Stringent measures will be taken if anyone is found breaking the rules. Security checking at different points on important thoroughfares will also take place. The police, however, are keeping close watch to check illegal selling of banned firecrackers. Some smugglers try to sneak in banned fire crackers in trucks loaded with vegetables mainly from South 24 Parganas. To curb this, policemen will be posted at strategic locations days ahead of Kali Puja.
In a bid to ensure that no banned crackers get sold in any market, four firecracker markets are set up every year in different parts of the city.
Officers of the state Fire and Emergency Services department have also created awareness among people to avoid any incident of fire during Kali Puja. Awareness has also being created among people so that they are safe while bursting firecrackers.
