Police seize truck full of cough syrup, one held

Kolkata: The city police on early Thursday morning seized a truck illegally carrying bottles of cough syrup valued at Rs 3 lakh and arrested one person for his alleged involvement in smuggling syrup bottles.
Acting on a tip off, a team from Hastings police station intercepted a truck at St. Judges gate. Police recovered 11,000 bottles of cough syrup.
Police came to know from the investigation that a truck full of cough syrup would pass through the area. They also came to know that the truck was to carry these bottles to Karimgunj. When the vehicle was passing through the area, police stopped the vehicle. They took the youth to the police station where he was arrested after a prolonged interrogation. It is learnt that the accused admitted to his guilt. The accused also admitted that he was assigned to take these bottles to Karimgunj in Assam. According to preliminary investigation, police suspect that these bottles would have been smuggled to Bangladesh. Police also suspect that the accused who has been arrested might be involved in an interstate smuggling racket.
The bottles which have been seized by the police cost around Rs 27 each. These bottles would have been sold in Bangladesh at a much higher price.
