Police bust cricket betting racket in Baguiati, 8 held

Kolkata: Bidhannagar Police busted a cricket betting racket late on Tuesday night and arrested eight persons from a housing complex in Baguiati. The arrested persons have been produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's (CJM) Court at Barasat and three of them have been remanded to two-day police custody.

According to police, on Tuesday night sleuths got a tip-off that some people are involved in betting on the IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Acting on the information Detective Department of Bidhannagar Police and Baguiati Police station conducted a joint raid at a flat of the AWHO Housing complex at Tegharia. Sleuths found eight persons were betting over the said match. They could not produce any valid license for running such business.

Immediately, all of them have been rounded up and taken to police station. Later, it was found that the prime accused in the racket identified as Raju Khandelwal had rented the flat to run the racket.

During the search, sleuths seized huge numbers of mobile phones, laptops and other devices which were being used for the accused person's gain. Following the seizure all of them have been arrested under sections of the West Bengal Gambling and Prize Competitions Act.

Out of eight three persons identified as Raju Khandelwala of Bangur, Pankaj Maru of 136 Jessore Road and Pankaj Chhawcharia of Chawlpatti in Baguati have been taken in to police custody for further investigation.
