Pay cabins to be introduced in all state medical colleges

Kolkata: After witnessing the success of pay cabin in the SSKM Hospital, the state government is set to introduce similar facility at all the medical colleges across the state and also in the district medical colleges.

According to sources in the health department, 26 cabins are being set up at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital in the city while 12 cabins are coming up at MR Bangur Hospital. All the pay cabins will have various modern facilities. The cabins at each hospital will be fully air-conditioned.

The patients will be able avail the facility of a locker in the cabins. A television and sofa set will be installed at each cabin. There will be an attached bathroom in each cabin.

The Woodburn block of SSKM Hospital has already been given a major facelift, as the state Health department has carried out renovation work of the unit a few months ago. All the cabins at the Woodburn block had been upgraded. The state government introduced paying cabins for those who can afford them. This will also help the government to generate some revenues. The Mamata Banerjee government had introduced free health services at all the state run hospitals.

Now, the state health department is developing the cabins at other medical colleges. According to sources, the patients who are willing to book a cabin measuring around 300 sqft at any medical college in the city, will have to pay Rs 2,500 per day while in the medical colleges in the districts, the patients have to pay Rs 1,500 a day.

The cabins will be available in the district hospitals at the cost of Rs 1,000 per day. If a patient wants to book a cabin measuring more than 300 sqft, he/she has to pay Rs 4,000 per day in case of medical colleges in Kolkata, Rs 1,000 for a cabin at medical colleges in the districts and Rs 700 for the cabins in the district hospitals.

State Health department has a plan to increase the cabin capacity at the Woodburn ward of the SSKM Hospital so that more patients can be accommodated. Some more facilities may come up at the ward for the benefit of the patients.
