Patient's death sparks rampage in Medica

Kolkata: Medica Superspecialty Hospital premises got chaotic on Monday afternoon, after the family members of a patient who died at the hospital earlier during the day, went on a rampage, ransacking a portion of the hospital.
The incident has spread panic among patients admitted to the hospital, leading authorities to call up police. A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control by dispersing the mob.
It was learnt that the victim Samir Adhikary (45), a resident of Purvachal in Jadavpur was taken to the hospital after he suffered a cerebral attack. The family members of the victim said that after treatment, his health condition was improving. They also claimed that the patient was fine when they talked to him at around 9 am on Monday. Later, hospital authorities informed the family members at around 1 pm that the patient had died.
As the news of his death reached the victim's house, the family members accompanied by some of his neighbours rushed to the hospital and staged a demonstration. They overpowered security staff of the hospital and entered the premises. They carried on the rampage for nearly half an hour, ransacking the furniture at the reception area. The incident has triggered panic among the staff, many of whom have left the place in fear of being heckled.
The family members of the victim alleged that the hospital authorities had taken the patient to the High Dependency Unit (HDU) without informing them. They raised questions on why the hospital authorities had not taken prior permission before transferring him to the HDU. "How can the patient's condition suddenly turn worse when he was recovering well," they asked.
In a separate incident, family members of a newborn baby staged a demonstration at the Suri District Hospital, alleging that the hospital authorities had refused to admit the baby who was suffering from respiratory distress.
They also alleged that an on-duty doctor had told them that he would admit a patient according to his own will. Mina Bibi, the patient's mother, a resident of Khoyrashol area in Birbhum, alleged that the accused had also misbehaved with them when they took the baby to the hospital.
