Parts of city to face water supply woes today over bridge piling work

Kolkata: Water supply in a major part of South Kolkata will be affected on Wednesday, with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation undertaking shifting of water supply pipeline for piling work of the new Majerhat Bridge.

Filtered water from Garden Reach Waterworks will be stopped after 10 am on Wednesday morning and so Borough 8, Borough 9, Borough 10 and parts of Borough 11 and 12 will not receive water. The areas that will be affected include Chetla, Harish Park area in Bhowanipore, Kalighat, Ranikuthi, Layelka, Golf Green and Garfa in the south. Around 25 wards under the KMC will come under the ambit of this. Supply will be restored again on Thursday morning.

"The Public Works Department had requested us to shift a water pipeline to facilitate the piling work of the proposed Majerhat Bridge. This work is urgent so we have decided to take this step," a senior official of KMC's Water Supply department said.

It may be mentioned that S P Singla Constructions of Haryana has been engaged by the PWD to build the new bridge, in place of the one that had caved in on September 4, 2018. The old Majerhat Bridge has already been pulled down, with the state deciding to build a new bridge.
