Parnasree murder: Son-in-law, woman's daughter killed her for property

Kolkata: It was greed for property that led Sipra Bhattacharjee's daughter and son in law to murder the elderly lady. After prolonged interrogation, Parnasree police station arrested the victim's son-in-law Anupam Bhattacharjee and her daughter Kaveri on Saturday night. They were produced at Alipore Court on Sunday and was remanded to police custody till September 6.
"Prima facie it appears that it was greed for money and property that led to the murder. The accused had also prepared a false suicide note to make the crime seem like a suicide and divert the course of investigation. Charges of murder (Section 302 of IPC) and common intention (Section 34) of IPC have been slapped against them. We will interrogate them in custody to ascertain the reason for murder, "a senior police officer said. The primary autopsy report had opined that the cause of death may be violent asphyxia because of manual strangulation and smothering.
The body of the victim residing at Fakirpara Road in Behala Parnasree was recovered from her room with blood oozing out from her nose and ears. Locals had said that the sexagenarian's son-in-law Anupam and her daughter Kaveri have been living in Parnasree address for the last eight years and would torture her physically and mentally. Earlier, she used to complain after the death of her husband a year back that she was on her own and hardly talked to anyone.
The police had detained both the deceased's daughter and son-in-law on the basis of allegations of torture and after prolonged interrogation the duo admitted their crime.
