'Outsider' steals baby from Malda hospital, victim's family stage protest

Kolkata: A woman claiming to be an employee of the Malda Medical College and Hospital allegedly stole a newborn baby from the maternity ward of the hospital on Wednesday. The family members of the woman, who delivered the baby, launched a protest against the incident on the hospital campus.

Sima Das, a resident of English Bazar area of the district, was admitted to the Malda Medical College and Hospital five days ago. She had given birth to a baby boy on Monday. The health condition of the infant and the mother was stable.

The baby was on the bed with the mother when the incident took place.

The family members of the victim alleged that a woman entered the maternity ward of the hospital on Wednesday morning claiming was an employee of the hospital.

She told the woman that her baby needs vaccination and took the baby with her.

Das raised an alarm after the woman did not return with the baby. Nurses and other staff members of the hospital rushed to help her. She started inquiring about the child and also questioned the hospital staff members in this regard.

The woman came to know that the lady who took the

baby with her for vaccination was not an employee of the hospital.

The incident triggered anger among the family members who staged protest a demonstration on the hospital campus.

They asked how an outsider could get access to the maternity ward of the hospital. They alleged some of staff members of the hospital might have been involved in the incident.

The family members of the woman also demanded a probe into incident.

A senior official of the hospital said the authorities would ask the police to conduct a probe if the family members of the victim register an

official complaint with the hospital.

The official further said that no complaint has been registered in this regard.
