Organs of brain dead woman save lives

Kolkata: Within a week of three organ transplants happened in the city. Adding to the list, another transplant was conducted here on Monday.

According to sources, on November 8, a woman from Malda was admitted at a private hospital in Mukundapur with complaint of chest pain.

Later, it was found that she had suffered a cardiac arrest. Two days after the cardiac arrest, doctors declared her brain dead. Following the declaration, her family members wished to donate her organs.

As soon as the consent was received from the woman's family, procedure of organ donation was started.

On Sunday, her organs were extracted and a person suffering from cirrhosis of liver received the liver. Another patient received one of the kidneys at the same hospital. Another kidney was taken to SSKM Hospital through a green corridor where a man received the kidney.

Earlier on November 5, organs of a brain dead patient were taken to SSKM Hospital and Command Hospital through four green corridors from a private hospital near Mukundapur.

On the same day, a history was written by the doctors of SSKM Hospital after they conducted heart transplant surgery on a 25-year-old youth who had undergone a heart surgery at the age of 16. The patient has been kept on observation since the transplant completed.
