One more nabbed in Bhadreswar Chairman murder case
Kolkata: Police have arrested one more person on Wednesday in connection with the murder of Manoj Upadhyay, Chairman of Bhadreswar Municipality.
The accused, Ranjit Singh, was arrested from Bhadreswar. It may be mentioned that this is the ninth person arrested in this connection. Some more, including Independent Councillor Raju Sahu are still at large.
A police officer said that the accused is close to Raju. Police suspect that he is well aware about the whereabouts of Raju and would help the police to arrest him. Police had been keeping a close watch on the movement of Ranjit for the past few days and he was picked up from an area near his residence after his movement was found suspicious. Moreover, police had come to know about his involvement with different works of Raju after interrogating the arrested youths. Police had earlier arrested one Munna in this connection and later, seven persons were arrested from Benaras.
Police on Thursday produced Munna and Ranjit before the Chandernagore Court. Munna has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days while Ranjit was sent to police custody for the same number of days. It was on November 30 when the seven persons, who were arrested from Benaras, were remanded to police custody for 14 days. The seven persons include Raju Chowdhury, Ratan Chowdhury, Krishna Chowdhury, Akash Chowdhury, Rajesh Chowdhury and Santosh Prasad. Sources said that police will be interrogating Ranjit in front of Ratan and Krishna.
Meanwhile, Pralay Chakraborty has been made the new Chairman of the Municipality. He was the Vice-Chairman of the civic body. Chakraborty was on good terms with Manoj and would be taking forward the projects started by his predecessor.
