One killed, 45 others injured as bus overturns in Murshidabad

Kolkata: One person was killed while 45 others were injured, some of them critically, after the bus they were travelling in overturned. Among the injured passengers there were women and children.
The incident took place at Choddo Mile area under Daulatabad police station in Murshidabad on Friday morning. All the injured passengers were rushed to the Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. According to the doctors some of the patients were in
critical condition. The bus was going to Berhampore from Domkal. While crossing the Choddo Mile area, the bus suddenly overturned. Local people said that the road is full of potholes. Moreover, the bus was crowded as a result of which the driver was driving the bus in a slowly. The eyewitnesses said that the bus overturned when it took a sudden turn to avoid a pothole.
The local people rushed to the spot and started a rescue operation. One person was trapped under the bus. The other passengers were taken to the hospital. The passengers who were trapped under the bus was declared brought dead by the doctors. The incident led to traffic jam in the area and the vehicles remained stranded for a long time. Police later reached the spot and made necessary arrangements to remove the bus from the road. Some of the local residents staged demonstration alleging the condition of the road has remained pathetic for a long time. Despite repeated pleas, no steps were taken to repair the road which is full of potholes. The police later brought the situation under control and the demonstration was lifted. The driver of the vehicle has been absconding since the incident.
Seven women and two children were among the injured passengers. Police are yet to ascertain the identity of the victim.
