One killed, 15 injured in bus collision on NH-117

Kolkata: One person was killed and 15 others were injured, some of them critically, when the bus they were travelling in collided head-on with another bus coming from the opposite direction.
The incident took place near Banganagar More under Falta police station in South 24 Parganas on Wednesday morning.
The incident not only triggered tension in the area but also led to traffic congestion on National Highway 117.
A state-run bus going to Diamond Harbour from Kolkata collided with another private bus coming from the opposite direction. The private hospital was coming to the city from Raichowk.
The local people said that the state-run bus was at a high speed when the driver lost control and hit the private bus. The local residents took part in the rescue operation. The passengers travelling in both the buses were left traumatised after the accident.
The local people rescued the injured passengers
and sent them to the hospital. After being informed, the police reached the spot and started an investigation.
Around 16 passengers who were in the buses were rushed to Diamond Harbour sub-divisional hospital by the local people and the police where one passenger died later.
Around 15 passengers were admitted to the hospital with various injuries on their bodies. Some of these injured persons were later shifted to MR Bangur Hospital as their condition deteriorated.
The incident triggered huge traffic jam on National Highway 117 with vehicles remaining stranded.
The situation was brought under control after the police removed the buses from the spot.
According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that both the buses were running at high speed which is beyond the permissible limit.
The passengers told the police that both the bus drivers were over-speeding despite warnings from them. Police have started a detailed probe in this regard.
