One killed, 1 injured in 2 separate road accidents

Kolkata: One person was killed while another has been injured in two separate road accidents on Sunday morning.

The first incident took place in Murarai area of Birbhum on early Sunday morning where a biker was mowed down by a speeding truck.

The incident took place at Mitrapur village. The victim Ram Adikari (46) was going to attend the rice-eating ceremony of one of his relatives at Tarapith. When he was riding his motorcycle, a speeding truck hit him

from behind on Murarai-Omarpur road.

The victim got crushed under the wheels of the truck. The truck driver immediately sped up the vehicle after the incident in order to flee the spot. Some locals, however, chased the vehicle and managed to stop the vehicle a few kilometers away from the spot of the accident.

An irate mob started beating up the truck driver and the helper. They also damaged the vehicle following the incident. It was learnt that the truck driver and the helper were injured in the incident.

After being informed, the police reached the spot and rescued them. They freed the victims from the locals and took them to the

local police station. The body of the victim was sent to a nearby hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The locals told the police that the accident took place due to overspeeding of the vehicle.

The truck driver could not control when he saw the biker while taking a sharp turn near Mitrapur area.

Locals also alleged that accidents often take place in the area as the vehicle ply at a high speed flouting

traffic norms.

They staged a demonstration on the road leading to traffic congestion in the area in the morning.

Police have started a probe in this regard. They are also investigating if the driver was in a drunken state while the accident took place.

In another incident, a truck driver had his leg cut off from the knee after the truck he was driving rammed into a stationery trailer from behind.

The incident took place near Deulti in Howrah's Bagnan.

The truck was coming to the city from Kolaghat on Sunday morning. Locals informed the matter to the local police who in turn rescued the victim and rushed him to Uluberia Sub-divisional hospital.

The victim has been identified as Binod Sahu who was hailing from Bihar. His condition is stated to be serious. Police suspect that the driver might have fallen asleep at the time of the accident. Police have started a probe.
