On Women's Day eve, police team to cycle from Cooch Behar to Howrah
Kolkata: On the eve of the Women's Day, a team comprising police officers from Howrah Police Commissionerate will be cycling from Cooch Behar to Howrah to create awareness on the need of self defence training for girls.
It may be mentioned that the police commissionerate has already introduced Sukanya project to provide self defence training to girls.
Now, a step has been taken to create awareness in this connection across the state.
So, an assistant commissioner of police and a self defence trainer will set out for the bicycle journey. Assistant Sub-inspector Krishnapada Mondal and trainer Goutam Bhattacharya will set out from Cooch Behar on Women's Day morning that is on Thursday.
They will pass from all the districts and finally reach Howrah. Both of them will visit girls' schools which will fall on their way.
They will make the girls understand the necessity of undertaking training on self defence.
During to their visit to schools, Bhattacharya will also demonstrate some tactics of self-defence that the girls can use in case they need in their daily life.
It may be mentioned that a major step to provide self-defence training to girls was taken after the change of guard in the state in 2011. The project Sukanya is a brainchild of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to provide self-defence training to school goers. The step to introduce the project Sukanya was first taken up by the Kolkata Police a few years ago.
The same project was also later taken up by Howrah City Police, Bidhannagar City Police and Barrackpore Police Commissionerate. The Howrah City Police is providing training to 200 girls from 10 schools in each phase.
Later, some authorities of some colleges had also approached the Howrah City Police to include them in the similar training.
The effort of the ASI and the self-defence trainer is expected to make more girls aware in North Bengal and they will spread the same message among their parents after returning home. So, both of them would try to visit more number of schools.
