Nursing student's body found hanging at National Medical Colg

Kolkata: Mystery shrouds the death of a first year nursing student, whose body was found hanging from the ceiling inside her hostel room at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH) on Saturday morning.

The incident has triggered tension among other nursing students. Police said that the victim used to stay at the nursing hostel situated close to the surgery building in the main campus of the hospital.

Some of her fellow inmates found her hanging from the ceiling fan. The matter was immediately informed to the CNMCH authorities. Police soon reached the spot and recovered the body.

The investigating officer has found a suicide note from her room. Police are yet to ascertain if she has committed suicide or there was any foul play behind the incident.

After going through the suicide note, the investigating officers suspect that the victim had been suffering from mental depression. It was alleged by a section of people in the hospital that the deceased had been subjected to harassment in her workplace as she failed to mingle with other students.

It has also been alleged that the student was from a lower middle-class background and she was not well conversant in English. Being a daughter of a daily wage labourer from Cooch Behar, she reportedly could not adjust with others and as a result, she might have gone into depression, suspect the police.

After talking to the family members of the victim, the police came to know that the girl wanted to pursue Bengali Honours but eventually had to get into the nursing course.
