NRS puppy case: Accused students barred from attending classes till probe is over

Kolkata: The three-member committee constituted by the NRS Medical College and Hospital authorities to probe into the killing of 16 puppies submitted a report to the hospital on Wednesday.

In its three-page report, the committee has held the two nursing students responsible for the killing the animals on the basis of which the hospital authorities have decided not to allow them to attend classes till the probe is complete. Meanwhile, it may be mentioned here that the two accused nursing students — Moutusi Mondal and Soma Burman who were arrested on Tuesday in this connection have been granted bail by Sealdah Court on Wednesday. They were eventually sent to judicial custody for their failure to submit the bail bonds.

The report which was submitted by the committee to the hospital superintendent will be sent to the Swasthya Bhawan, the officials of which will take the final call in this regard. The inquiry committee held three other nursing students responsible for their involvement in the crime. Steps would be taken against the three others who are said to be third year students of nursing.

According to sources in the state Health department, all the accused may be debarred from pursuing their courses if they are found guilty following the completion of the investigation.

The Health department may also decide the fate of other three including two staff members of the hospital.

It may be mentioned that a large number of animal activists belonging to various organisations and some TV artistes congregated outside Sealdah Court where the two accused students were produced.

"We want justice for the puppies who were brutally killed and demand stringent action against the perpetrators. Animals cannot be killed in this manner," an animal lover said outside the court on Wednesday.

Some students from Presidency University and Jadavpur University staged a protest demonstration outside NRS Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday. Rubia Mondal, a researcher of Presidency University, had allegedly faced the wrath of some doctors at the hospital. Mondal later lodged a police complaint alleging that she was hurled abusive languages and threatened with dire consequences on a social networking site.

The two accused have been granted bail on condition of Rs 2,000 registered security and Rs 2,000 local security. But because they failed to submit the bail bonds within the court's time, the duo has been sent to judicial custody. They will be facing Test Identification (TI) parade on Thursday.
