Noted poet, educationist Tarun Sanyal passes away

Kolkata: Noted poet and educationist Tarun Sanyal passed away in the city early on Monday.
Condoling the death of Sanyal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted: "Saddened at the passing of poet Tarun Sanyal. My condolences to his family and friends."
A teacher of Economics at Scottish Church College, Sanyal was connected with the Left movement since his student days. Later, along with Mahasweta Debi, he visited the backward areas of Jhargram districts and highlighted the hapless condition and oppression on the people belonging to the backward classes through his writings. He was a poet and an essayist and his works were published in many periodicals and magazines.
He also raised his voice against the erstwhile Left Front government when it took land from the farmers forcibly in Rajarhat in the mid 1990s. He supported the movement launched by Mamata Banerjee against the acquisition of farmland to set up an automobile factory in Singur. He is survived by his daughter Satarupa Sanyal, well-known personality in Bengal's cultural world.
