Nod to set up private varsity

Kolkata: Considering the growing needs for quality education in the state and also to cater to the growing number of students, the Bengal government has decided to allow the construction of a self-financing private university at Barrackpore in North 24-Parganas.

The University will be named after Swami Vivekananda.

State government will pass the Swami Vivekananda University Bill, 2019 in the current Assembly session in order to allow a private educational and charitable trust to set up the university.

The Higher education department had received a proposal regarding the setting up of the university.

The higher education department formed a committee headed by the Vice-Chancellor of West Bengal State University in North 24-Parganas' Barasat.

The committee has conducted the feasibility study and recommended the government that the educational trust can set up the university.

After considering the recommendation of the committee, the state government decided to allow the private trust to come up with the self-financed university in the district of North 24-Parganas.

The main campus of the proposed university will be set up at Barrackpore but it would cater to the students from across the state.

The state government will not bear any financial responsibilities as it has proclaimed a status of self-financed one.

The private trust has told the state government about the details of the project.

The proposed university would deal in various specialized fields like science, technology, law, management, social sciences, medicine, education, humanities and various performing arts.

After examining various aspects, the state government has framed the bill which is likely to be passed in the

current session of the Assembly.

The proposed university will have to obtain accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council or such other body as determined by the Centre or the state government or the appropriate regulatory body from time to time within three years of its establishment and communicate the same to the state government.

The dissolution of the proposed university will have effect only after the last batch of the students in the regular courses completes the courses.

It may be mentioned here that after coming to power the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has set up many universities across the state so that more number of students can be given the opportunities of studying higher studies.
