NKDA extends last date of paying property tax till Aug 31

Kolkata: The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has extended the last date of paying property tax for the first quarter till August 31.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the NKDA on Saturday afternoon. The date has been extended since due to the general elections, many people have failed to pay the property tax within the stipulated time.

The property tax is paid online and the NKDA has made elaborate arrangements to facilitate the house-payers who come to its office to pay the money online. The employees have been given training for the purpose.

The property tax in New Town is calculated on the Unit Area Assessment (UAA) basis. There are 3,000 property owners who pay the tax online. Several steps are taken to encourage the house owners to pay the property tax on time. The residents have been taught about the UAA method of calculating tax of their properties. The Base Unit Area Value (BUAV) is highest for the plots located in the central business district and lowest on those meant for refugee rehabilitation. Collection of property tax is a major problem for all civic bodies throughout the state. In Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), property tax dues have reached a staggering Rs 2,000 crore.
