Rose Valley owner's wife grilled by police; ED quizzes Manoj Kumar

A team of senior officers of the Kolkata Police interrogated Subhra Kundu, the estranged wife of Rose Valley Group chief Gautam Kundu, on Wednesday in connection with her "relation" with assistant director of Enforcement Directorate (ED) Manoj Kumar.

Meanwhile, Manoj Kumar was also interrogated by the ED officials. He was quizzed for around three hours and was asked to give his submission on the case.

Kumar – who was the investigating officer (IO) in the Rose Valley scam case – was suspended after two videos purportedly showed him with Subhra at Kolkata Airport and a hotel at Sunder Nagar area in Delhi.

Sources said the police officers went to Subhra's South City apartment on Wednesday morning and interrogated her for around three hours.

It is learnt that before getting into the details of her connection with Kumar, Subhra was asked to reveal how she was associated with the day-to-day functioning of Rose Valley Group.

Police officers asked Subhra to tell them whatever she knows about different policies of the group for investing the money collected through various chit fund schemes.

"Subhra, being the head of the jewellery section business of Rose Valley Group, seems to be well aware of the money trial. Moreover, the folder – Madam Rose Valley – in one of the computers in the office of the chartered accountant on Mangoe Lane hints her involvement in the scam," said a senior police officer.

According to sources, Subhra also told police that the funds of Rose Valley Group were used for producing films, some of which she herself had acted in.

Police also asked her if she had ever been interrogated by the ED, to which she replied that she had given the same details to the ED that she gave to Kolkata Police on Wednesday.

Subhra also claimed that she had helped ED probe into the scam by telling them whatever she knew.

When asked about her connection with Kumar, Subhra – instead of giving direct answers – told the police that she had gone to Delhi separately and whatever exchange took place between them was purely for the sake of investigation. She was also asked to reveal the number of times she met Kumar, the places where they met and the purposes.

Police officers found discrepancies in her statement when she was asked who introduced her to the chartered accountancy firm on Mangoe Lane. It is learnt that the police would question her again if necessary.
