State govt orders inquiry into Ausgram violence

Nabanna has given an order to inquire into the trouble that broke out at Ausgram in Burdwan and indentify those who were behind the incident. The state government has also sought a report from the district administration about what had caused the resentment among the villagers.

The state government also wanted to know if someone had incited the violence that had taken place at Ausgram in the past two days. The government has given strict instruction to the district administration to identify those who attacked the police station on Saturday. The senior officials of the district were also asked to inquire if any political party was fanning the violence.

It may be recalled that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday had said that the state government will pull up the people who have damaged government and private property and money would be realised from them. A Bill in this regard will be placed in the forthcoming session of the Assembly.

At least six police personnel were injured when a mob comprising of local villagers went on rampage ransacking Ausgram police station. The mob also set an outer portion of the police station on fire. The local people alleged that police were helping in an illegal and unauthorised
construction in a local school compound.

They were demanding the removal of the Inspector-in-charge of the local police station. Teachers of the school, students and guardians staged demonstration at Ausgram Police Station and blocked a nearby road for hours on Friday protesting against the unauthorised construction. They also demanded the release of three teachers of the school held by the police.

Police have held nearly 15 persons for spreading violence at the police station and attacking the policemen. They vandalised adjoining police barrack, pelted stones at policemen, set a temporary camp on fire and ransacked police vehicles and motorcycles, parked there.

A huge contingent of police force along with Rapid Action Force (RAF), led by Burdwan SP Kunal Agarwal, went to the spot and brought the situation under control. Police forces were currently carrying out route march at the area. District Magistrate and the local MLA also rushed to the spot to monitor the situation.

SP Burdwan Kunal Agarwal said that a mob attacked Ausgram Police Station, injuring few police personnel.
A heavy police force has been deployed to control the situation.

Senior police officers were looking into the allegations of highhandedness of the accused police officer and action would be taken if anyone was found guilty.

The officer has reportedly been closed by the department.
