Five injured as old building collapses in Muchipara

Five persons were injured, three of them seriously when a portion of an old building on Prem Chand Boral Street collapsed and fell on them on Saturday afternoon.

The injured persons were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital where the condition of three was stated to be critical.

Local people said that around 10 am a portion of the first floor balcony collapsed with a deafening sound. The injured persons who were sitting on the pavement were injured. They were taken to CMCH where they were admitted. A team of the Building department of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) went to the spot and conducted an inquiry. The debris has been cleared by the KMC's conservancy workers.

Senior KMC officials said that there were some dangerous and dilapidated buildings in Muchipara area. The owners of these buildings could not be traced and the buildings had not been repaired for many years. The average age of these structures is close to 150 years. They said that most of these buildings were under the control of tenants and were litigated properties.

The KMC has taken up a step where owners of old buildings can pull down the old structures to make rooms for new ones after making necessary rehabilitation of tenants. The scheme has evoked fairly good response. The officials said that between Borough 1 and 6, there were over 1,000 old dilapidated structures and they should be pulled down immediately. They said that despite KMC's notice, many people had refused to vacate dilapidated buildings.
