Bizman, family receive threats from extortionists

The family of a Howrah-based businessman has been receiving repeated phone calls from some miscreants demanding extortion from them.

The younger brother of the businessman, who is a railway contactor in the city, had received threat calls on his mobile number. The brother stays at Liluah in Howrah.

He told the police that for the past few days, he has been receiving repeated phone calls from some miscreants who threatened him of dire consequences if his elder brother does not pay the amount of money that was demanded as extortion.

The miscreants also gave death threats if their demands were not met.

The businessman lodged a complaint at the Liluah police station on the basis of which police have started an investigation.

In the course of the investigation, police came to know that the threat calls were made from some number in Nepal. Police said that the calls were made from various numbers in Nepal. Police are trying to ascertain who might have been involved in the incident.

The victim's younger brother told the police that he started receiving phone calls demanding extortion from January 5.

The callers have been telling him that his elder brother would face dire consequences if he does not pay the extortion. They also threatened to stop his business if the amount was not paid.

Police are investigating if it was the result of any past business rivalry. The investigating officers are not ruling out the possibility of business rivalry.

They are also examining how phone numbers from Nepal were used for making calls.

Police are also interrogating the businessman and his younger brother in this connection so far.

Police are not yet divulging the identity of the businessman and his younger brother for the sake of investigation.
