KMC to develop Behala Bakultala market in PPP model

Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will develop the Behala Bakultala market in public- private partnership (PPP) model. A MoU was signed between KMC and the builder on Tuesday afternoon, Tarak Singh, member, Mayor in Council (Market) said. Singh said it would be a seven storey structure with basement and ground floor (B+ G+7). The deadline to complete the proposed market is 4 years. KMC will rehabilitate 200 shop owners.

The builder will have to complete construction on time failing which he will be pulled up. Bakultala market is more than 60 years old. After Independence, many refugees from East Pakistan came and settled in the areas surrounding Bakultala. The new market will be a modern market will all modern facilities. Vast areas of Behala have experienced major changes over the past two decades when new buildings have come up pulling down old structures. As a result, setting up of a modern market was urgently felt. The market will have an underground car park in the basement.
