A middle aged man was beaten to death at North 24 Parganas Jagatdal on Sunday night. The local residents beat him to death suspecting that he was a rapist.
The local people alleged that the man and his two associates tried to gang-rape a newly married woman there but the woman started to scream while he tried to get her to a washroom.
Local residents rushed to the spot to capture the man and his friends. The man was beaten to death there before policemen from Jagatdal police station reached there. They rescued the man but he had died by then. His friends were taken to the hospital and were admitted in critical condition.
"The man and his friends were roaming around the area when they were attacked. Some local residents alleged that the men tried to gang-raped a woman but we have to investigate whether there's any truth to their claim," said a police officer.
In another incident, a toto driver was badly beaten up by some local goons at Ghutiari Sherif of South 24 Parganas.The driver was admitted in a hospital with several
injuries. Some pedestrians, who tried to save the driver, also received injuries. Some goons, brandishing their guns, even threatened the passersby with dire consequences.
On Monday morning, Romen Mondal, a local toto driver, who was plying his vehicle through the road from Jibantala to Ghutiari Sherif College, stopped
there after some college girls called him up. The girls took the battery driven vehicle there.
The goons then appeared there and tried to enter the toto with those girls. "Romen protested the incident there restraining those goons from entering his vehicle. He ran his vehicle from there," said a police officer.
Later, the goons caught the toto driver while he was returning from his previous journey. They pointed a gun at Mondal and beat him there with wooden rod, the police informed.
