Haldia firing incident: Girl accidentally pulled trigger while playing with pistol

In a new twist to the Haldia firing incident, police confirmed on Monday that the class IX girl received bullet injuries when she pulled the trigger of the gun herself while playing with it.

It may be mentioned that a 16-year-old girl Karishma Khatun was shot at inside her house at Sutahata near Haldia in East Midnapore on Saturday late night.

Police was initially told that someone had opened fire at the girl from outside while she was studying in a room adjacent to the road.

The investigation, however, revealed that it was nothing but a story framed by the victim and her father to distract the police as the pistol was kept in the house illegally.

The victim's father Kayum Mullick, who is a worker contractor, has a hobby of keeping different types of firearms.

On Saturday when there was no one in the house, the girl was playing with a pistol. She accidentally pulled the trigger and received bullet injuries.

Police spoke to the victim's neighbours, who told the investigating officers that they were not at all aware of any attack by someone from outside.

Moreover, the girl was sitting in a room on the first floor of the house and it was not possible for someone from outside to shoot at her as she was not sitting close to the window.

Also, the nature of injury suggested that the bullet was shot at from point blank range. Such aspects raised suspicion in the mind of the police and they interrogated the victim and her father.

Both of them confessed that they had made up the story and tried to hide the actual incident thinking that Kayum would get arrested for keeping illegal firearms in his house.

The police hasn't ruled out the possibility of arresting Kayum.
