Class IX girl shot at by miscreants in East Midnapore

A 16-year-old girl was shot at inside her house at Sutahata near Haldia in East Midnapore on Saturday late night.

Police said two unidentified youth came on a motorbike and opened fire at the girl, Karishma Khatun, when she was studying while sitting beside a window in her ground floor room. The room is situated adjacent to a road. Thus, the interior of the room is visible from the road.

Faces of the youth were covered with pieces of clothes and they fled after firing at the girl before anyone could have understood what went wrong. The girl is a Class IX student of a Madrasa and her father is a labour contractor. Her parents were in another room and they came running after hearing the sound of firing bullet.

They found the girl lying in a pool of blood. Local people rushed to the spot hearing the parents cry for help. They took her to Haldia Subdivisional Hospital. She was later shifted to a city based hospital as her condition deteriorated.

The police initiated a probe in this connection, but are yet to arrest anyone. A police officer said that the miscreants were well known either to the victim or to her parents. The police are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind the incident, but suspect that some old rivalry had led to the crime.

A complaint has been lodged by the police in this connection. Investigating officers from Sutanata police station went to the spot. They also spoke to some friends of the victim. But they failed to give any clue to the police that would help them to arrest the accused.

The police have also asked the victim's father whether he had a quarrel with anyone over any issue in the recent future.
