Youth killed in accident near Kankurgachi

A youth was killed in a road accident near Kankurgachi when a truck hit a youth when he was riding a motorbike with two of his friends sitting on the pillion. The incident took place late night on Saturday.

A police officer said that the victim Raj Das was a resident of Phoolbagan area. He went out to take a ride on major thoroughfares of the city with two of his friends. He was riding the two-wheeler while two of his friends were sitting on the pillion. None of them were, however, wearing helmets.

A truck that was approaching from the opposite direction hit the two-wheeler. The youth sitting on the pillion had a narrow escape, but Raj received severe injuries on his head. The police took them to NRS Medical College and Hospital. Two of them were provided with necessary treatment while Raj was declared brought dead.

A police officer said that the accident took place at an intersection. It seems that neither the truck driver nor the victim had bothered to slow their vehicles down at the intersection. It was not at all possible for driver of the truck to stop the vehicle despite applying the brakes as the two-wheeler was very close to the truck when the driver had seen it in front. The driver of the truck somehow managed to flee with the vehicles.

It may be mentioned that the city police took several initiatives to check road accidents especially due to rash and reckless riding of two wheelers. Even plying of motorbikes on AJC Bose Road Flyover, Maa Flyover and Park Street Flyover was restricted from 10 pm to 6 am every day after being instructed by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The reason behind imposing the ban was that the youth used to race on the flyovers.
