Newborn's demise sparks outrage outside Dum Dum nursing home

Kolkata: Family members of a newborn who died of alleged medical negligence at a private nursing home in Dum Dum, staged a protest demonstration outside the nursing home.
The incident took place late on Monday morning. A heated altercation broke out between a section of doctors and the relatives of the victim. The baby's father, Sovan Chakraborty, has held a doctor guilty for the death of his son. He alleged that the baby had died due to gross medical negligence by the doctor.
Chakraborty had admitted his wife to the nursing home in Dum Dum a few days ago. She delivered a baby boy on Saturday. The health condition of the baby had started deteriorating since his birth.
The family members drew the attention of the doctors and nurses but they failed to improve his health condition. As the condition of the infant did not improve, the baby was finally transferred to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday, where the baby died.
The victim's family members claimed that the doctors at RG Kar Medical College said that the infant might have died due to bleeding from the umbilical cord, containing the blood vessels.
The family members of the infant became infuriated and held a protest demonstration outside the nursing home on Monday night.
An altercation broke out between the family members and the nursing home staff and doctors. The family members demanded an independent probe into the death of the baby. After being informed, police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
The demonstration was lifted after the police officers assured the family members that a probe would be conducted.
The family members have registered a complaint with the police, who have started a probe in this regard. Police are interrogating the doctors and the nursing staff who conducted the delivery of the infant.
