New Town residents pledge to back water conservation initiatives

Kolkata: Residents of New Town took a pledge to conserve water on Friday as a part of celebrations of Save Water Day initiative, which was announced by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation ( HIDCO), New Town Kolkata Development Authority ( NKDA) and Nabadiganta Industrial Authority ( NDITA) organised several programmes to create awareness among the residents about water conservation.

On Thursday, a sit-and-draw competition and an essay competition on water conservation was held in which children and youths took part.

There was a slogan competition at New Town Business Club. Rallies were taken out from Kolkata Gate, New Town Business Club and Gate number I and II of Eco Park. The rallies converged at Gate number II of Eco Park where a meeting was also held.

Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation has taken up a move to save 30 gallons of filtered water per day by recycling 30 gallons of water of wewer water, which is used for road side gardens and organic vegetation that has been carried out on the roof top of a market.

Café Ekante has decided that they will not provide 1 litre potable water bottles to the guests. Instead they will be provided 500 ml and 200 ml water bottles as a water conservation measure.

The guests who will ask for tap water will be given half glass water and the refilling will be done on request as it is often seen that the guests who come for lunch or dinner often waste water.

Debashis Sen, chairman HIDCO along with Swami Vishokananda planted saplings to mark the occasion. The presence of the residents in the programmes was remarkable. HIDCO is also contemplating the idea of rain water harvesting as a part of its drive to conserve water.

HIDCO officials have met the representatives of different housing complexes and urged them to come up with suggestion on water conservation.

The representatives of different housing complexes attended the function that took place in the evening. Once the suggestions come, HIDCO officials will sit with them and will carry out their feasibility.
