New district hospital in Howrah to improve health services

Kolkata: Taking a major decision to improve the health services in Howrah, Chief Minister has directed setting up of a completely new district hospital on a plot of 5 acres.

Expressing her displeasure over the infrastructure of the existing age-old structure of the district hospital, Banerjee said that it will be shifted to a plot where the district correctional home is situated at present. The hospital, at present, is situated on only two acres of land in one of the most congested areas of Howrah.

The plot on which the correctional home is situated is of around 5 acres which would be sufficient to bring up the district hospital with better facilities and infrastructure. The correctional home will get shifted to a plot of around 11 acres near Aloopara in Howrah city itself. It may be mentioned that a Police Training Institute is also coming up on the part of the plot along Aloopara.

With the district hospital getting shifted to the plot of the correctional home, the land on which the hospital is situated at present with the district court on one side and the Collectorate building on the opposite will become vacant.

"I have learnt that the offices of the District Magistrate and Commissioner of Howrah Police Commissionerate are also not in a good shape. So their offices and residential quarters will be constructed on the plot where the hospital is situated at present."

The Chief Minister has also taken stock of the implementation of different projects in the district and directed to take necessary steps to ensure 100 percent institutional delivery. She also directed all the local bodies and peoples' representatives to take initiative so that all the projects get implemented on time. Besides enquiring in detail about health-related issues, Banerjee also took stock of the situation in the flood-prone areas in the district and also directed to submit a survey report to Chief Secretary Malay De to construct a bridge. She also enquired about the number of people who died due to lightning in the district. She came to know that as many as 14 people were killed and have also received the compensation. The Chief Minister once again took a dig at DVC for releasing water that led to floods in certain parts of Howrah district.

In connection with the development of crematoriums under project Baitarani, she directed all MLAs to submit proposals to develop the infrastructure of five crematoriums in each of their areas.

She also asked about the vertical structure that is coming up off Kona Expressway as a business hub and directed necessary steps to sort out the problems posed by representatives of businessmen in Howrah.
