New bridge proposed near RG Kar to smoothen traffic movement

Kolkata: Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has plans to come up with a bridge connecting Canal West Road and Raicharan Ghosh Road near RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to speed up traffic movement in the area.

"We have floated tender for a topographical survey and map drawing showing every detail of the surrounding area across Circular Canal near RG Kar Road for the proposed bridge," said an engineer of the Roads and Bridge section of the KMDA.

According to local sources, there is an existing old bridge near the proposed one but vehicles travelling from Central and North Kolkata have to take a somewhat circuitous route along the bridge to reach Kolkata Station. The new bridge will facilitate traffic movement to and from Kolkata Station and will also ease traffic congestion on the old bridge.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the KMDA has proposed to Kolkata Police to keep the Aurobindo Setu at Gouribari area closed from August 22 to 24 for carrying out load capacity test. This bridge connects Ultadanga with Khanna junction. The KMDA has roped in a common agency for conducting the load test of eight bridges in the city and has already got the nod from Kolkata Police for conducting such an exercise on Sealdah flyover from the evening of August 15 to the evening of August 18 (72 hours). During this period, the bridge will be closed for traffic.

A clod from underneath the Baghajatin flyover broke down on Friday night. The KMDA has decided to do repair work on

Saturday night and according to sources, the vehicular movement will be restricted from Saturday night to Sunday morning for those bound towards the direction of Patuli.
