Never seen torture as inflicted by BJP workers, Central Forces: Mamata

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee expressed her unhappiness over the way the elections have been conducted in the state. After casting her vote at Bhowanipore Mitra Institution, Banerjee alleged that the BJP used the Central Forces to inflict atrocities on the people. She also accused the Central Forces of being "extra-active". Banerjee was accompanied by Member, Mayor-in-Council (Parks and Gardens) at the KMC Debasish Kumar.

"I have never seen this type of election in the past. The torture that was inflicted on TMC workers and the people in general is simply unprecedented. BJP used the Central Force jawans to create trouble in the state and inflict atrocities on people," Banerjee told the reporters while leaving the polling booth.

An official statement issued by the Trinamool Congress on Sunday afternoon alleged that the Central Forces took orders from the BJP and mercilessly beat up citizens and Trinamool workers. Even bombs were hurled.

The statement says: "After being briefed from the BJP headquarters, the Central Forces are performing an unprecedented role in Bengal. They have now resorted to intimidation and torture. They are mercilessly beating up Trinamool workers. We are against violence and want the polling process to be peaceful..."

High handedness of the Central Forces and incidents of intimidating voters by a section of the jawans were reported from various places under Barasat Parliamentary constituency on Sunday.

Trinamool Congress candidate from Barasat Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar alleged that the Central Force jawans asked the voters standing in the queue outside Deganga Gobindapur Primary School to cast their votes in favour of the BJP.

Ghosh Dastidar went to the school on Sunday morning and an altercation broke out between her and the Central Force jawans at the polling booth. She alleged that the jawans deployed at the polling booth urged the voters to cast their votes in favour of BJP.

Later in the day, Ghosh Dastidar staged a sit-in demonstration in front of New Town police station to protest against the activities of the Central Forces. She added that the Central Force jawans were chanting 'Jay Shri Ram' slogan and tore apart the flexes of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee.

"The Central Force jawans acted as BJP's goons. Can a jawan damage the flexes in this manner with a slogan of 'Jay Shri Ram'. Service rule does not permit them to do so. Steps would be taken against them. We have the video in our possession," Ghosh Dastidar said.

It may also be mentioned that some local villagers from Pakda area of Sashan under Barasat constituency staged demonstration in front of the Central Force jawans alleging that they tried to

convince people to cast their votes in favour of BJP. A mob also ransacked a police vehicle. The Central Force jawans had to resort to lathi-charge to disperse the mob.

In another development, some local residents from Haroa's Bakjuri village caught a BJP activist who impersonated as a police officer and tried to indulge in false voting. In the face of police interrogation, the accused broke down. He was later arrested.
