Mukul grilled for 2 hrs over railway post scam

Kolkata: BJP leader Mukul Roy was questioned by Kolkata Police on Monday afternoon, regarding the case of duping a businessman in Sarsuna.

According to sources, Roy was summoned for questioning regarding a case where a businessman identified as Santu Ganguly of Sarsuna area had alleged that he was duped of Rs 65 lakh by promising a berth in one of the railway committees.

After starting the probe, police had arrested a trade union leader of BJP identified as Baban Ghosh, on August 21. Two days after his arrest, another person identified as Saddam Ansari was arrested.

It was alleged that Roy and others including Ghosh and Ansari had claimed the money for making him a member in one of the railway committees.

Roy had earlier moved Calcutta High Court for anticipatory bail and the court had granted stay on his arrest till September 5, which fell on last Friday. On Friday, during the hearing, Justice Sahidullah Munshi extended the stay on Roy's arrest till September 16.

It was also mentioned in Friday's order that if Kolkata Police wants to question him, the BJP leader can be called once during this period. However, police would have to serve notice at least 72 hours before the date of appearance.

Immediately after the order, Kolkata Police sent a notice to Roy, asking him to appear before the Assistant Commissioner (AC) in charge of Sarsuna police station, at Thakurpukur police station premises by Monday afternoon.

At around 4 pm on Monday, Roy reached Thakurpukur police station, where he was grilled for almost two hours. At around 6 pm, he came out of the AC's office and claimed that he has been framed. "It is a conspiracy. I answered all the questions. I will cooperate with the investigation," he said.

Ghosh had allegedly taken Roy's name to instill confidence in Ganguly and extract the money out of him. Ganguly had given the money in phases between 2015 and 2016.

Several years passed but Ganguly did not get the railway committee berth and failed to meet Ghosh or get in touch with him over the phone. On January 25, Ganguly lodged a complaint at the Sarsuna police station against Roy, Ghosh and a few others.

Earlier, Ghosh had tried to set up an organisation by involving Tollywood film actors. At present, he holds the post of BJP trade union president in Bengal.
