Mousal kidnapping: Abducted woman, son recovered; two accused arrested

KOLKATA: Officers from Kolkata Leather Complex police station managed to rescue the woman and her son who were abducted from village Mousal on the south eastern fringes of the city on December 21. The sleuths have also managed to nab two of the accused involved in the kidnapping.
According to an investigating officer, the woman along with her minor son had gone missing on December 21 and a missing diary was lodged by the family members. As the family was losing hope of recovery with more than a month having elapsed since the disappearance, the case took a dramatic turn.
The victim woman's father received a ransom call with a demand of Rs 20,000 from an unknown person as a condition for setting the mother and son free. The caller had threatened the family with dire consequences if they do not cough up the money. The call was made from the victim's cell phone.
A fresh case of abduction was initiated on January 28 and under the leadership of the additional officer in charge of the police station and sub-inspector Manish Singh, a dedicated team
was formed for probing the matter.
Police as per the demand of the caller maintained watch in Sealdah area where the amount of ransom was to be paid. One of the accused Jatan Chakraborty, alias Mithun, a resident of Teliniopara, under – Purbasthali police station in Burdwan was arrested from in front of a departmental store.
The mobile phone of the victim was also recovered from his possession.
He was interrogated on the spot and the police team was taken to an area under Kalna police station where with the assistance of local police, the second accused person Santosh Agarwal (45) of Kalna Chowk Bazar, was arrested from his residence. On grilling the two accused, the victim woman and her son were rescued from a locked room on the second floor of Santosh's house which was used to run a brothel. Police have already done the medical examination of the victim woman and her minor son. They have also appealed to Alipore court for recording the statement of the victim woman under section
164 of CrPC.
