'Moon mission an attempt to divert attention from India's economic slump'

Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday mocked the Narendra Modi government at the Centre over the hype around the moon mission Chandrayaan 2 and described it as an 'attempt to divert attention from the economic slump in the country'.

"They are referring to the moon mission as if the Chandrayaan launch is happening for the first time in the country. As if before they came to power, no such missions were taken up. It is an attempt to divert attention from the economic disaster," Banerjee said at the state Assembly during the discussion on NRC under Rule 185.

However, it may be mentioned that the whole nation is anxiously awaiting the historic landing of Chandrayaan 2 on lunar surface late on Friday night.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his twitter handle and wished ISRO scientists luck for Chandrayaan 2's successful landing on the surface of the moon.

The Chief Minister was also vocal about the arrest of former Finance minister P Chidambaram and criticised the manner in which he was arrested.

"I have nothing to say on the Chidambaram case. Law will take its own course. But what was the purpose behind keeping him in Tihar jail like an ordinary prisoner? He had been the former Finance and Home minister of the country, so they should have shown minimum respect to him," she asserted.
