Miscreants posing as cops shoot businessman

Miscreants stormed into the house of a businessman posing themselves as police officers and shot him from the close quarter on Sunday morning.

The incident happened in Serampur in Hooghly. The victim has been undergoing treatment at a hospital with a bullet injury on his abdomen. Posing themselves as policemen, a gang of 4-5 miscreants entered the house of Ajoy Roy Bhowmik, a local businessman, and started beating him up. When Ajoy's wife and daughter came to his rescue, they were also roughed up. An altercation broke out between the miscreants and the businessman. The victim's 10-year-old daughter also received injuries when she was beaten up by the goons.

The victim's wife told the police that following the altercation one of the accused took out a gun and shot him from point blank range. The miscreants fled the house immediately after that. They even hurled bombs on their way out which caused panic among the neighbours. It is quite clear that they had come to take revenge due to some business rivalry, preliminary investigation reveals. The victim was rushed to Serampore Walsh Hospital and later shifted to a private hospital in the city as his condition deteriorated. Presently, his condition is stated to be critical. Police said that Bhowmik has been running a stationery shop in Serampore for the last few years. Before setting it up, he was allegedly involved in a number of anti-social activities. Police said the incident might have resulted due to that. A probe has begun and raids are being conducted to nab the culprits.
