Middle-aged man arrested for attempting sexual abuse

Kolkata: Police arrested a middle-aged man on charges of attempting to molest a woman in Salt Lake on Monday morning.

Police said a woman lodged a complaint with the Bidhannagar East police station on Monday morning alleging that she found the man approaching her when she was standing at a bus stand at CJ Block to get an auto-rickshaw.

Realising that the man would harm her, the woman started crying for help.

Locals who were in the area went to the spot and caught the man. They informed the police who reached the spot within a few minutes and arrested the man.

Police later came to know that the man reached the place on a bicycle. Police suspect that he was following the woman and reached where the complainant was waiting to take an auto-rickshaw from.

A police officer said he will be produced before the court on Tuesday.

Police initiated a probe to ascertain the exact behind the attempt to attack the woman. They are trying to ascertain whether there was any old rivalry that led to the incident or some other reason behind it.

Police are also trying to know whether the person was keeping a watch at the movements of the woman.

Sources said besides taking statement of the woman, police have also spoken to some of the people who were in the area when the incident took place.

Cops have also taken measures to ensure that such incidents donot happen in the area again. It may be mentioned that Bidhannagar Police has already taken several steps including frequent patrolling by policemen from local police stations and it has helped in bringing down such cases.
