MeT office predicts heavy showers from Sunday in South Bengal districts

Kolkata: The Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore predicted heavy rainfall in South Bengal districts including the city in the next 48 hours.

The weather office has issued an alert to the fishermen in the coastal districts urging them not to venture into the sea in the next two days. Those who have already gone out have been asked to return to the shore by Sunday morning.

The weather office prediction says that a low-pressure trough will be formed over the Bay of Bengal bringing in heavy showers in various South Bengal districts. It would start raining in the coastal districts from Sunday evening. The situation may further intensify depending on the strength of the low-pressure trough. The sea will also remain turbulent which is why fishermen have been alerted.

According to a weather official, the Monsoon axis may also remain active in South Bengal districts till August 7 which will bring more rain. It will compensate for the deficit in rainfall in the state so far to some extent. It is presumed that in the current month, the state will receive more rainfall than what it had witnessed in the past two consecutive months.

Various South Bengal districts, including Kolkata, saw scattered rainfall in the past couple of days. It has brought some amount of relief for South Bengal from the sweltering heat and the high humidity. The city's sky partially remained cloudy on Saturday. Districts like North 24-Parganas, Nadia, Howrah, Hooghly, South 24-Parganas received light to moderate rainfall on Saturday.

"The rainfall may intensify from Sunday evening due to the impact of a low pressure and active Monsoon axis. Various South Bengal districts may receive heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours. It will also help to check the deficit rainfall in the state so far," a weather official said. Incidentally, it may be mentioned that tidal waves flooded the seashore and wreaked havoc in the coastal areas of Sankarpur, Tajpur and Mandarmani on Saturday morning. The seawater submerged many farmlands in Tajpur. Villagers in the area panicked after seawater flooded the adjoining areas. Some of the locals alleged that work for constructing the embankments was not properly done in Tajpur area as a result of which the flooding happened because of the high tide, affecting the locals and agricultural lands.
