Mentally unstable man hospitalised after attacking cops, locals

Kolkata: Bali in Howrah witnessed to a bizarre incident on Saturday morning when a mentally ill youth, identified as Lalit Chowdhury, a resident of Bihar's Samastipur turned violent and started biting several people who visited a market place in the area.

The locals who were out there on the street for buying various items found him pelting stones. Many of them ran to a safer place.

Chowdhury later bit some others who had gathered at the market place. An irate mob then attacked Chowdhury and the latter sustained injuries.

The situation turned worse when the police reached the spot and two cops were bitten by him on their hands. When they dragged him into a police jeep parked on the roadside, Chowdhury started conversing with the policemen in the control room through the walkie talkie. After being abused by the man, no police personnel was ready to get into the car. Even the driver of the vehicle refused to steer the jeep out of fear of being attacked.

Chowdhury was later taken to Howrah District Hospital where he bit a doctor and a patient as well.

The hospital superintendent who came to the rescue of the patients after hearing the incident managed to calm him. The only person with whom Chowdhury behaved well with was the hospital Super.

As soon as he was taken to a prison van outside the hospital to shift, he turned violent and snatched a baton from a policeman. He attacked the on-duty cop with it.

It continued for some time before the policemen finally managed to close the door from outside and took him to Pavlov Hospital.
