MCI grants 150 permanent seats for three medical colleges

Kolkata: A total of 150 undergraduate medical seats at three medical colleges in the state have been announced as being permanent by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
Another private medical college has been allowed to admit candidates in 150 seats for the current academic year.
Permission for around 50 medical seats each from Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital, Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research and Burdwan Medical College and Hospital have been given for five years.
These were earlier permitted seats and the medical college authorities had to take permission from
the MCI every year for admitting the candidates in these seats.
Permitted seats are those for which the medical college authorities need to take permission every year.
The MCI officials visit the medical college authorities before giving the final clearance for admission. But in case of permanent seats, the medical colleges do not require permission from the MCI for admitting students. This is a major boost for the state in the field of medical education.
It can be mentioned here that after coming to power Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has taken various initiatives to enhance health infrastructure in the state.
She also increased the medical seats in the state so that more doctors can be produced in each year.
This will address the crisis of doctors in the state-run hospitals across the state.
In another development, IQ City Medical College in Durgapur has been allowed to admit candidates in undergraduate medical seats by the MCI for the academic session of 2018-19.
It can be mentioned here that in the previous year, the private medical college authorities did not get clearance from the highest medical regulating body due to its lack of infrastructure.
In the next year, this private medical college has to take permission from the MCI again in the next year.
Around 11.5 lakh aspirants across the country will appear the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) scheduled to take place on May 6. More than 75,000 candidates will appear in the examination. NEET is the national level medical entrance examination. The result will be published in June.
