Mayor of HMC places highest budget ever

Kolkata: Dr Rathin Chakraborty, Mayor of the Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC), placed the highest ever budget in the history of the civic body on Friday.
The budget has been placed with a stress to ensure an overall development of the entire area under the jurisdiction of HMC.
A budget of Rs 781.73 crore has been proposed. The budget is Rs 1.81 crore more than the last financial year.
It may be mentioned that Rs 585.98 crore has been proposed only for development in municipal affairs and it has witnessed 5.65 percent increase in budget for the same compared to that of the previous year.
At the same time, the budget allocation for development of minorities is 18 percent, 37 percent to provide benefits to slum dwellers and 45 percent is to undertake other development projects.
Stress has been given on to further improve the services including supply of safe drinking water, drainage, primary healthcare and slum development.
Criticising steps like demonetisation and hasty introduction of GST, the Mayor appreciated works of all its departments for their performances despite facing problems due to such decisions of the Centre. Meanwhile, it was ordered to cancel all casual and special leaves of employees of the corporation till March 31. In a fresh circular, it has been notified that the order was effective till March 23 instead of 31st of the month.
Moreover, all borough chairpersons are urged to send files to the office of the Member Mayor-In-Council (MMIC) with whom the work is related. The file will be send to the office of the Mayor, for final decision, after the concerned M-MIC have a look at it.
