Massive traffic congestion on NH-31 for almost 5 hours after two trucks collide head-on

A road accident in which two trucks collided head on led to massive traffic congestion on National Highway 31 with traffic movement remaining suspended for almost five hours on Friday morning at Islampur in North Dinajpur.

Police said a Siliguri-bound truck collided head on with another heavy lorry that was approaching from the opposite direction on a bridge at Hatga area in Islampur. People who witnessed the accident told the cops that one of the rear wheels of the Siliguri-bound truck got punctured when it was crossing the bridge and the driver failed to control the vehicle. It led to a head-on collision with the heavy lorry that was approaching from the opposite direction. Though no one was injured in the incident, both the vehicles were damaged.

As a result both the lanes on the bridge were closed. The incident took place at around 4 am on Friday and work was initiated to clear the road could only be started at around 8.30 am. Huge cranes were pressed into service to remove the damaged trucks. The roads remained close for around 5 hours with vehicles standing in long queues on both the lanes of the road. The police took another one hour to clear the traffic congestion that led to inconvenience for scores.
