Manicktala: Minor girl kills self, dowry death suspected

Kolkata: A minor girl committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of a room at her in-laws' house at Manicktala after her parents failed to give dowry. The incident took place early morning on Sunday.

Police said the girl Tudu Paik had got married two years ago with one Nepal Paik, who is a resident of Bagmari Road at Manicktala in central Kolkata. Preliminary investigation revealed that the girl hanged herself from the ceiling of a room at her in-laws house. The girl's in-laws did not inform her parents about the incident. It was the neighbours who had informed them and the police.

Police went to the spot and sent the body for an autopsy.

They also arrested four persons including her husband in this connection.

A police officer said that the victim's parents alleged that the accused did not allow her and her seven-month-old baby to take rest on bed and forced her to sleep on the floor. The accused often used to ask her to bring money from her parents. Since her father had failed to meet their demands, the accused used to beat her up.

She was beaten up on Friday and her in-laws had asked her to tell her parents to give them some money. But she did not call her parents despite being beaten up. As a result, the accused had not even given her food to eat.

Police came to know that she had stopped asking for money from her parents for the past few months knowing that it would not be possible for them. It led to deterioration of the situation and they started torturing her.

Sometimes their neighbour used to intervene and had also asked the girl to return to her parent's house. Police also took statement of local people on Sunday.
