Man throws acid on wife's face, escapes from house

A man threw acid on his wife's face after an altercation between the couple on Thursday night at South 24 Parganas' Bishnupur. The husband fled from his house soon after the incident.

Police learnt that the accused Tapan Shyamal, a resident of Contai, took a rented accommodation at Bishnupur. The neighbours informed the investigators that he used to beat his wife over several issues.

On Thursday night, the neighbours heard Tapan's wife wailing. "I saw Tapan was running away from his house and heard his wife's cries. Later, I reached his house and saw his wife was lying on the floor covering her face with two hands," said a neighbour.

The neighbours took the woman to a hospital as she was critical. "I lodged an FIR with the local police station. We'll help the investigators to arrest the culprit," the neighbours said.

It may be recalled that police arrested one Swarup Halder, the prime accused of an incident in which acid was thrown on a woman's face last week in a local train in South 24 Parganas' Canning.

The accused was taken to the court and remanded to judicial custody. However, the accused alleged that he was innocent and had no connection with the case. It was a conspiracy against him. The police arrested Halder on the basis of the complaint lodged by the woman's father.

"We are conducting raids to curb the selling of muriatic acid in open market," said a police officer said.
