Man shot by criminals on Dashami night

Kolkata: A 38-year-old man from Kanchrapara in North 24-Parganas was shot dead by some unidentified miscreants on Tuesday night. The incident took place at Netaji Nagar in Kanchrapara on Dashami. Tension prevailed in the area on Wednesday morning as local residents demanded a crackdown on nearby criminal dens.

The victim, Raju Kurmi, is said to be a Trinamool Congress worker. He was a resident of Bhut Bagan rail colony. A contractual labourer by profession, Kurmi was returning home from a nearby area around 3 am when the miscreants stopped his way and shot him from close quarters. The victim fell on the ground after being hit by the bullet. The miscreants managed to flee from the spot before local residents reached the area. Kurmi was found in a pool of blood by the onlookers. He was taken to Kalyani JNM Hospital on Wednesday morning. Doctors declared him dead on arrival at the hospital. The body was sent for the post mortem examination. The Barrackpore police have started a detailed probe. They are yet to confirm if there is any political angle behind the murder. After the preliminary investigation, the police suspect there were three miscreants.
