Man poses as WBSEDCL employee to extort money from customers, in cop net

Kolkata: Officials of the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) has lodged a complaint with the West Midnapore police claiming that a person identified as Santanu Roy is collecting money from the customers in the district posing himself as a staff member of the WBSEDCL.

A villager, who was duped by the accused, also registered a complaint at the local police station in this regard. On the basis of the complaint, the district police have arrested Roy who is a resident of Tatarpur village of West Midnapore.

Some of the villagers from the district alleged that the accused introduced himself as a WBSEDCL employee and has been collecting money from them. The matter came to light after Biswanath Soren a customer from Tatarpur village registered a complaint with the station manager of Ramjibanpur mentioning how he was duped by the accused. In his complaint, Soren said that Roy went to his house and collected Rs 7,100 claiming himself as an employee of the Customer Care Centre of the WBSEDCL. Initially, the Soren family mistook Roy as the WBSEDCL staffer but later they found that the accused had duped them.

After going through the complaint from the customer, the senior officials of the WBSEDCL in the district found that the accused was neither a staffer nor he had any connection with the customer care centre of Ramjibanpur. The WBSEDCL had also suffered a huge revenue loss due to the extortion of money from the customers in the district.

A senior official of the WBSEDCL in the district registered the complaint with the CK Town police station narrating the incident. . The investigating officers are interrogating the accused to ascertain the modus operandi. They are also trying to know if some other persons in involved in the incident.
